Organizational Model: Hub and Spoke

In this example model, the Hub and Spoke is similar to the Franchise model. It is a group of business led and owned implementation teams under the remit of an enterprise strategic governance and delivery model. However, the Centre of Excellence in this model are also able to deliver projects independently.

In this model those business areas that do not have the resource size or automation potential to set up their own delivery capability will utilize a delivery capability that sits in the COE. The COE delivery resource could also be used for large transformation projects that span multiple business areas.

Hub and Spoke

How do processes flow through the organization?

The COE is responsible for RPA strategy, best practice, innovation, training, governance, run and monitor and license utilization.

Each Business Area sets themselves up with their own delivery teams within their operating model and headcount. They are responsible for their own: Process Discovery, prioritization, PDD, SDD, access, build, test, release and maintenance.

A process may be identified by a process SME, documented by a Process Analyst within the specific business area and then designed, built and tested by the delivery team in that area. The COE would have involvement at three key touch points in the delivery lifecycle (although this can vary between organizations):

  1. The Governance Board - to approve a process for automation
  2. The Design Authority - to approve a process design
  3. Acceptance into Service - to approve release into production

The process itself is then run and monitored by the COE.

Where required, the COE also has delivery capability meaning they are able to provide an end-to-end delivery service for business areas which do not need or want their own delivery capability. For more detail on the process flow in this instance, check out our Centre of Excellence page.
